On April 12th 2018, BSC researchers attended the 13th edition of the Trade Fair at the University of Barcelona. The aim was to introduce the students to climate services and the S2S4E project, and to attract young talent.

The University of Barcelona’s Trade Fair is a long running event that brings private companies and research centres closer to students, fostering talent acquisition and securing contracts, master thesis or PhD positions. Hundreds of students from all around campus attend the fair, coming from a diversity of faculties such as life sciences, chemistry, physics, maths and computer science.

Climate services are expected to keep expanding in the next years worldwide, mainly driven by climate change and its impact on agriculture, the global fight on air pollution and the energy sector turning to renewable sources - focus of the S2S4E project. This steady expansion requires to engage young new climate researchers in the short-term, so we decided to increase awareness amongst undergraduate and master students.

Jaume is a young physicist passionate about meteorology. He attended last year’s Trade Fair and considers the event “a good opportunity to meet with the companies you are most interested in”. He keeps a nice memory of the fair, a “large and well-organized event, with most of the career opportunities a graduate or master’s student can opt for”. Jaume attended this year’s fair too, but on an entirely different role: today he is a PhD student at the BSC, developing his own project on seasonal forecasts.

After an entire day of dissemination, over forty highly motivated students showed interest in becoming part of the climate services community in the future. Hopefully, some will have the opportunity to join the BSC and, just like Jaume, lend a hand to tackle the exciting challenges ahead of us.
